Collection: Phragmipedium

Phragmipedium orchids — the tropical slipper orchids of the Americas — are among the most dramatic and rewarding genera a collector can grow. Native to the cloud forests, riverbanks, and rocky streamsides of Central and South America, Phrags are distinguished by their elegant, cascading petals and a remarkable tolerance for consistent moisture that sets them apart from nearly every other orchid genus.

Where their Old World cousins the Paphiopedilums favour restrained elegance, Phragmipediums deliver bold, theatrical blooms. Species like Phrag. caudatum produce ribbon-like petals that can exceed 60 cm in length, while Phrag. besseae, discovered as recently as 1981, introduced an electric scarlet-red into orchid breeding that revolutionised the genus overnight. Modern hybrids combine these traits into compact, free-blooming plants with intense colour.

Phragmipedium are sequential bloomers, meaning a single spike opens flowers one after another over weeks or even months, giving you an extraordinarily long display from a single plant. They prefer bright indirect light, cool to intermediate temperatures, and love water more than almost any orchid you'll grow. Many growers keep them in shallow trays of water with excellent results.

At Lady Vanda, our Phragmipedium orchids for sale are nursery-propagated and selected for bloom quality and vigour. Explore our collection of tropical slipper orchids. From fiery besseae hybrids to long-petalled kovachii crosses, all shipped with expert care guidance and lifetime growing support.
