The Catasetum Alliance
Catasetinae orchids — the deciduous powerhouses of the orchid world are unlike anything else you'll grow. This subtribe includes Catasetum, Cycnoches (swan orchids), Mormodes, and Clowesia, all united by a dramatic lifecycle: explosive vegetative growth in summer, spectacular blooms in autumn, and a complete winter dormancy where the plants drop every leaf and rest until spring.
What makes Catasetinae so addictive is their sheer theatrical energy. Catasetums are the only orchids that physically launch their pollen at visiting pollinators a spring-loaded mechanism triggered by touch. Cycnoches produce extraordinary swan-shaped flowers. And the fragrance across the subtribe is legendary: chocolate, cinnamon, spice, citrus, and perfumes so intense they'll fill an entire room from a single spike.
Growing Catasetinae follows a simple seasonal rhythm. During the active growth phase (spring through autumn), they want heavy water, heavy feeding, bright light, and warm temperatures; treat them like hungry tropical vegetables. When the leaves yellow and drop in late autumn, stop watering completely and let the pseudobulbs rest dry until new growth emerges in spring. This dormancy cycle is not optional it's what triggers next year's spectacular bloom.
