Product Details

8" Clay Orchid Pots give specimen orchids room to grow in handmade Thai terracotta with open, decorative walls. Choose round holes, hearts or lotus in a round shape, or round holes, hearts, scales or lotus in the ripple style.

This larger size is made for multi-growth Cattleyas, big Vandas, Mokaras and Aerides that have outgrown their baskets. The heavy clay base adds stability for top-heavy plants, while the side openings and porous walls keep roots aerated and drying evenly. A hole near the rim allows hanging.

Each pot is handmade without a master mold, so color, size and shape vary slightly. Sizes are approximate, as clay shrinks during firing.

Clay-pot buying guide

Glazed vs. unglazed clay: general differences
Feature Unglazed clay (our pots) Glazed clay
Construction Exposed clay surface, without a glaze coating. A fired glaze covers some or all of the clay surface.
Moisture Porous walls can absorb moisture and allow evaporation. Glaze reduces moisture movement through the coated surface; drying depends on glaze coverage, openings and growing conditions.
Drainage Glaze alone does not tell you whether a pot drains. Check the actual openings and keep them clear.

All of our clay pots are unglazed, including this handmade terracotta pot with open-pattern walls. Water can move through the porous clay and evaporate, making it well suited to direct potting, especially in wet or humid growing conditions. Drying still depends on airflow, watering and your growing mix.

Direct potting or cache pot? For direct planting, check that water can escape freely and use a chunky orchid mix suited to your plant, or grow suitable orchids bare-root. To use as a decorative outer pot (cache pot), keep the orchid in a removable draining inner pot. Check that it fits without blocking airflow, remove it for watering and let it drain before replacing. Do not leave roots standing in water; protect surfaces beneath the open clay pot.

Choose by root fit. The 4-inch size suits compact root systems, 6-inch suits medium plants and 8-inch suits larger specimens. Choose the smallest size that holds the healthy roots without forcing or tightly packing them, with modest room for new growth. Avoid a large volume of unused wet mix. Sizes are approximate, not guaranteed inner dimensions; check the opening and depth for an inner pot.

Repotting. Repot when mix breaks down or healthy roots outgrow the usable space, ideally as new roots begin growing. Moisten roots before gently loosening them; do not pull roots attached to clay or threaded through openings. Use fresh, suitable mix and increase pot size only when the roots need it.
