Product Details

Solid Wall Clay Bowls bring our best-selling Thai terracotta to orchids that like to stay moist. They have bottom drainage holes but no side openings, so media holds even moisture between waterings while the porous clay still lets roots breathe.

Choose 4" or 6" bowls with smooth walls, straight stripes, slanted stripes or a ripple rim. The wide, shallow shape is perfect for Paphiopedilum, Phragmipedium, potted Bulbophyllum and Catasetum in active growth, along with aroids and other moisture-loving plants.

Each bowl is handmade, so color, size and shape vary slightly. A handsome, natural alternative to plastic for moisture-loving orchids.

Clay-pot buying guide

Glazed vs. unglazed clay: general differences
Feature Unglazed clay (our pots) Glazed clay
Construction Exposed clay surface, without a glaze coating. A fired glaze covers some or all of the clay surface.
Moisture Porous walls can absorb moisture and allow evaporation. Glaze reduces moisture movement through the coated surface; drying depends on glaze coverage, openings and growing conditions.
Drainage Glaze alone does not tell you whether a pot drains. Check the actual openings and keep them clear.

All of our clay pots are unglazed, including the clay pots in this listing. Water can move through the porous clay and evaporate, making it well suited to direct potting, especially in wet or humid growing conditions. Drying still depends on airflow, watering and your growing mix.

Direct potting or cache pot? These solid-wall bowls have bottom drainage holes and no side openings. For direct planting, keep the bottom holes clear and choose a mix suited to your plant. Solid walls retain moisture differently from open-pattern pots, so adjust watering to the roots and mix. To use as a decorative outer pot (cache pot), keep the orchid in a removable draining inner pot. Check that it fits without blocking airflow, remove it for watering and let it drain before replacing. Do not leave roots standing in water; protect surfaces beneath the clay pot.

Choose by root fit. Choose the smallest size that holds the healthy roots without forcing or tightly packing them, with modest room for new growth. Avoid a large volume of unused wet mix. Sizes are approximate, not guaranteed inner dimensions; check the opening and depth for an inner pot.

Repotting. Repot when mix breaks down or healthy roots outgrow the usable space, ideally as new roots begin growing. Moisten roots before gently loosening them; do not pull roots attached to clay or threaded through openings. Use fresh, suitable mix and increase pot size only when the roots need it.
