Bulbophyllum maxillare (syn. masdevalliaceum)

Bulbophyllum maxillare (syn. Bulbophyllum masdevalliaceum), the red horntail orchid, looks more like a Masdevallia than a typical Bulbophyllum. Each thin stem carries a single deep maroon to reddish-purple flower edged in pale yellow, with long lateral sepals that taper into slender tails and a finely hairy dorsal sepal above a purple-and-yellow lip.

This epiphyte ranges from the Andaman Islands and Malaysia through Borneo, the Philippines and New Guinea to tropical Queensland, growing on lower trunks in warm rainforest. Give bright, filtered light, 65–95°F, high humidity and steady moisture. It grows well mounted or in a shallow pot.
